🌿 What You Can Do Right Now
When You Feel Lost in Life

— When You Lose Sight of Yourself —

When you hear the phrase “losing sight of yourself,” you may picture standing at a major crossroads in life.

What to do about your work.
What to do about your marriage.
What to do about your relationships with family.
Money, health, the future.

Yet in truth, we lose sight of ourselves over and over again in our everyday lives.

When someone invites us somewhere and we cannot say no, even though we do not really want to go.
When we tell our child “no” and then can no longer remember why we said no.
When we are smiling at a school parents’ gathering, yet inside we feel uneasy.
When we watch the news and the world feels like such a frightening place.
When a single word from someone has hurt us.

When we cannot feel joy or gratitude in our daily life.

It is precisely in these small moments that we are, in fact, losing sight of ourselves.
Losing sight of yourself does not necessarily mean you have made some great mistake.
To lose sight of yourself is to be away from the unique color, rhythm, and flow of life that is yours alone.
It is a sign that memories have begun to stir, and thoughts have started running ahead.

“What should I do?”
“I may have made the wrong choice.”
“It is already too late.”
“If only I had done it differently back then.”
“What will others think of me?”
“Is it really alright for me to be here?”

So many voices begin to stir within our minds. At times like these, we try with all our might to find an answer.
Which is the right choice? How can we avoid failure? How can we keep from being disliked? What might lift our mood?

Yet the more we search, the more we seem to wander into a maze of thoughts.

When we try to change ourselves or set ourselves right, from the very moment we notice we are doing so, we are given an opportunity to clean.

Whether it is the experience of feeling lost, or analyzing our past selves — rather than deciding that these are bad, if we simply receive them as “a chance to clean has come!” and put it into practice, our days come to reveal more freedom and spaciousness.

No matter where you are right now, even if you find yourself lost and longing to reach out to someone for help, there is something you can do in this very moment — and that choice will help you remember the uniqueness that is truly your own.
