When we look closely at ourselves, we notice that the patterns we repeat in life are often much like those of the family we were born into.
In Ho’oponopono, we often speak of cleaning on family, relatives, and ancestors \u2014 but how is this to be done?<\/p>\n\n\n

Why Is It So Easy for Family to Stir Us Up?<\/h3>\n\n\n

Interviewer\uff1a<\/strong>I’d like to share something that happened in my own life. I am a very sensitive person, easily moved by what I feel. On the surface I may seem gentle and even-tempered, but in truth I accumulate a good deal of emotion inside, and when it builds up to a certain point, it suddenly bursts out. Yesterday, I lost my temper very badly with my eldest son.<\/p>\n\n\n

Here is what happened. The new school term had started, and we had agreed that at 9 o’clock he would bathe and go to sleep. Last night, when 9 o’clock came, I tidied up his books and stickers for him, and when I returned to the room, I saw him carrying the dog and wandering about. In that moment I became very angry and threw the books down. My child looked at me with a very startled expression \u2014 he was clearly frightened by me.<\/p>\n\n\n

In that moment I was completely unable to control my emotions. Sometimes, even I myself don’t know what emotions have accumulated inside me. In that moment, I also didn’t know what was happening with my Inner Child. I don’t know whether others have had moments like this. I felt a little self-blame, and I asked myself: haven’t I been cleaning all along? Haven’t I always been at peace? Why would I still lose my temper so badly?<\/p>\n\n\n

I have a pattern: my emotions are usually triggered within the family. My mother, my children, my husband \u2014 they can all touch my emotional switch very easily. I’d like to ask you: when facing a situation like this, is there any advice, or a fitting cleaning tool?<\/p>\n\n\n

Nello Ceccon\uff1a<\/strong>My children are in their thirties now, and I too have situations like this. Just as you said, children often touch our emotional switch and bring out very deep emotions in us. From my own experience, as a parent, sooner or later you will go through exactly the scene you just described.<\/p>\n\n\n

For me, the first step is to become aware that my emotions are easily influenced by my family, and to see my own patterns. For example, if I know I have a pattern of anger, I remind myself to try, as much as possible, not to let my emotions burst out all at once in front of my family.<\/p>\n\n\n

We are human. Sometimes we may be unable to control ourselves, or may not even know why we act the way we do. But at the same time, I also feel that our children learn and grow even from our imperfections, and even from our mistakes. In certain situations, the arising of emotion is not in itself right or wrong. But this does not mean that we may shout at our children, or pour out all of our emotions onto our family. What we need to learn is forgiveness \u2014 and first of all, to forgive ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n

I practice forgiving myself, and after something happens, I begin cleaning right away. Ho’oponopono is a process of coming to know oneself. We are not blaming ourselves; we are understanding ourselves, and cleaning on these inner patterns. Once the related memories are released, they no longer need to replay in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n

Among the cleaning tools taught in the Ho’oponopono course, there are some for undoing the effects of what we ourselves have done. In situations like this, I use these cleaning tools. In this process, I trust that the negative influence I have had on my child will be lessened, and that time can be turned back.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Interviewer\uff1a<\/strong>At the time, when I saw my child looking at me with such frightened eyes, in that moment I felt as though I saw my own childhood self \u2014 that was exactly the feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n

Nello\uff1a<\/strong>Yes, those are all memories that are replaying. This is also why, if we can, we need to maintain the connection with our Inner Child. Perhaps these patterns will not disappear in a short time, but what matters is that, in the process of cleaning, we can choose to stop the chain reaction of these memories.<\/p>\n\n\n

For example, the memories that come from the family we were born into, or the patterns our parents passed on to us, may keep replaying unconsciously. But we can remind ourselves that we have the ability to stop the replaying of these memories.<\/p>\n\n\n

The memories of how you yourself were once treated, as a child, do not need to be carried on to your own children. Through cleaning, these memories can be released, and they will no longer appear again and again in your life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

How Do We Deeply Clean on Family and Ancestors?<\/h3>\n\n\n

Interviewer\uff1a<\/strong>In that moment, I too felt the influence coming from my childhood. After growing up, it seems I inherited this pattern of blame as well. I often blame myself inwardly, and so my Inner Child has, in fact, always been living amid criticism and blame, and will feel fear and fright even without any clear reason.<\/p>\n\n\n

For me, this is a very deep memory, and so I continue to clean on this part. I have also come to understand that my mother’s parents once treated her in the very same way. So I think that this is perhaps a kind of memory coming from the ancestors. A student once asked, too: how can we more deeply clean on the influence these ancestral memories have on us?<\/p>\n\n\n

Nello\uff1a<\/strong>Thank you for sharing. Being able to become aware of this is very important. We are indeed influenced by the memories of our parents and our ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n

In my experience, I have spent a great deal of time forgiving my parents, as well as my uncles, aunts, and other family members. I know that the relationship between them and me influences my life, and so I have cleaned very carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n

For example, I ask myself a question: \u201cWhat is the relationship between them and me like?\u201d Then I clean on the answer I have given myself.<\/p>\n\n\n

At the same time, I also deeply clean on the scenes of my interactions with them that remain in my memory.<\/p>\n\n\n

I believe it is very important to be willing to spend time deeply cleaning on the memories connected with family and ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n

This does not mean that we need to recall every last detail of everything that once happened. Rather, for example, when I know there is something I have always kept in my heart, or when a memory related to a certain family member suddenly surfaces in the moment \u2014 that moment is a time when we can let go, a time when we can clean.<\/p>\n\n\n

To clean on the thoughts and feelings that still exist within. This is a process that requires patience. And my goal is to be able to return to peace \u2014 to be able to feel peace toward my own past, my family’s past, my parents’ past, the past of my grandparents’ generation, and the past of my ancestors.<\/p>\n\n\n

And cleaning is precisely one path that lets us return to peace.<\/p>\n\n\n

I also clean on the names of my family’s ancestors. My great-grandfather, my grandfather, and even earlier, my great-great-grandparents \u2014 although I have never met them, when I do the 12 Steps (something learned in the official course), I write down their names and include them in the cleaning. In this way, I clean on my family line and my ancestral line.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Interviewer\uff1a<\/strong>You just mentioned \u201cdeep cleaning\u201d \u2014 what does that mean?<\/p>\n\n\n

Nello\uff1a<\/strong>When I say \u201cdeep cleaning,\u201d it first of all means giving myself the time and space to be able to sense my true thoughts and feelings toward a certain person or a certain matter.<\/p>\n\n\n

In this process, some memories may naturally surface and appear in consciousness. When I clean on these thoughts, feelings, and the memories that surface, I know that at the same time I am also cleaning on the memories in the subconscious that are linked to one another like a chain \u2014 that is, beneath one memory there is yet another memory linked to it, those deep memories connected layer upon layer.<\/p>\n\n\n

Another meaning of \u201cdeep cleaning\u201d is to clean carefully and concretely. For example, to clean on the names of my great-grandparents on my father’s side and on my mother’s side \u2014 this is a very concrete way of cleaning.<\/p>\n\n\n

Or again, I have a portrait of my great-great-grandfather, painted in the 18th century. When I feel the need, I stand before his portrait and clean.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Interviewer\uff1a<\/strong>So, if one has a photograph, one can also clean while looking at the photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n

Nello\uff1a<\/strong>If this is your inspiration, then yes. In this way, you are in fact helping your subconscious to return to peace with them. You are sending your subconscious a very direct signal \u2014 that you wish to experience peace with this person.<\/p>\n\n\n

Even though we do not know exactly what kind of memories exist in the subconscious, we do know that those memories exist. Our goal is not to vent emotion, but to transform \u2014 so that we can once again return to peace.<\/p>\n\n\n

Ho’oponopono is a process of repentance, forgiveness, and transformation, and in this process, we are willing to open ourselves to what is within.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
